“A step to new life”
The term “Sahayathra”, meaning “Travel Together,” reflects the spirit of companionship and support that defines this initiative. The name connects closely with the purpose of the project, as it enables beneficiaries to move freely with a wheelchair always by their side, sharing every journey together and promoting independence and dignity.
Sahayathra is a project initiated by Mobility in Dystrophy (MIND) Trust to provide wheelchairs and related assistive equipment to individuals living with Muscular Dystrophy (MD) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). These conditions often lead to progressive muscle weakness, making mobility support essential for daily life.
Research and field experience show that a significant number of beneficiaries supported by the organization come from low-income backgrounds. Many families face financial difficulties in purchasing appropriate assistive devices, which are often expensive but necessary for improving mobility and overall quality of life.
From 2017 onwards, through the Sahayathra project, Mobility in Dystrophy (MIND) Trust has provided a total of 285 assistive devices to individuals living with MD and SMA. These include electronic wheelchairs, manual wheelchairs, commode wheelchairs, patient hoists, and other essential mobility aids.
The project has played a vital role in improving mobility, independence, and participation in education, employment, and social life for many beneficiaries. By ensuring access to appropriate assistive devices, Sahayathra continues to support individuals in leading more confident, independent, and inclusive lives.
Mobility in Dystrophy (MIND) Trust was formed in 2017, by us patients suffering from Muscular Dystrophy (MD) & Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). In 2016, we started off as a small Whatsapp group of patients reaching out to each other.
With enthusiastic employees and volunteers, we are ready to support you no matter any time.
