“A space for love, hope and care” Mobility in Dystrophy (MIND) Trust is an organization formed by individuals who believe in the strength of the mind even when the body faces limitations. It is a community of people living with Muscular Dystrophy (MD) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), conditions that gradually weaken the muscles and affect mobility and independence. By supporting one another, the organization strives to help its beneficiaries grow, continue their education, and build sustainable livelihoods through improved opportunities and collective strength. Many individuals living with these conditions experience challenges that most people may never fully imagine—depending on others for daily activities such as moving, eating, or carrying out basic personal needs. These realities highlight the importance of creating systems of care, inclusion, and long-term support for individuals who face such circumstances every day. Within this community are children with dreams for the future, young people with ambitions, and adults striving to live meaningful and independent lives despite physical limitations. One of the major concerns for many families is the future of individuals living with MD and SMA, especially when they are currently dependent on parents or caregivers. Questions about who will support them in the future and how they will continue to live with dignity emphasize the urgent need for a safe, supportive, and sustainable environment where they can receive care and continue to grow. The term “Oridam,” meaning “A Space,” represents the dream project of MIND Trust. It is envisioned as a fully equipped, holistic center designed to provide a safe and nurturing environment for individuals living with MD, SMA, and others who require similar support. The project aims to go beyond providing shelter by creating a community where people can live with dignity, companionship, and hope. Oridam is planned as a comprehensive center that will include residential care, physical and psychological rehabilitation, education opportunities, and employment support under one integrated space. The vision is to build a community where individuals can continue learning, explore self-employment opportunities, and access essential services such as nursing care and physiotherapy. More than just a living space, Oridam represents a place where individuals can experience freedom, companionship, and a sense of belonging. Surrounded by a positive environment and supportive community, beneficiaries will be able to pursue new aspirations, rebuild confidence, and live a fulfilling life. Through the Oridam Project, MIND Trust aims to create a progressive care ecosystem rooted in compassion, inclusion, and sustainability—ensuring that no individual feels isolated and that everyone has a space where love, care, and shared dreams come together.
Imagine not being able to do things on your own, not being able to get up, walk, eat and perform basic needs without assistance …..Every healthy person should think – what if this happens to us ……… Some conditions and experiences should not only be heard, but should be experienced by oneself to that condition, to the problems, in order to see the intensity of this disease at least once in our mind.
Sitting in pain, unable to sweep away the swarms of ants that crawl freely into your own body and imagine the situation of taking a bath and performing basic necessities once in a week. Just visualise these situations in your mind ….. Unfortunately there is a group of people who are going through these untold stages of life.
The children who need to be the sunshine of tomorrow to the society, the smart young people who need to invigorate the society of today, the energetic middle-aged people who dream of a better tomorrow by illuminating the country and the house are all the treasures of the Mind. Amongst the fulfillment of mind and the vibrant colours of flowers that spread happiness though their body is not allowed to fly, they dream of a new world in their mind.Mind prepares its members especially the children who are just beginning to learn, for those who have dropped their education out halfway through their studies and for new livelihoods too.
The problem that many of these people face today is about the future of these sufferers as they move forward in life who are now under the care of their father or mother.Who will be their after the time of their parents to look after them or how to move forward without anyone, without a guardian, without being looked after ? At this juncture it signifies the need of our dream home ‘Oridam’ to guard and care each one of them.
A place to live quietly and happily is the dream of any ordinary person. Rather being within the four walls, ‘Oridam’ becomes the strength of the minds of those who are confined to themselves without seeing the outside world. It is a place where like-minded people, in the same situation, see the vast, open sky of happiness together and conquer their new dreams.
A new community of happy and healthy people is being formed here, where the continuing learning opportunities and self-employment opportunities including nursing care and physiotherapy unit, come together under one umbrella.
When one enter the vast space of freedom, greenery and flowers from the physical state, everything that is stationary there will begin to move again…….All it takes is ‘Oridam’ … a vast space with no isolation an place where love, care, life and sharing take place .It’s a place of progressive care with compassion.
Mobility in Dystrophy (MIND) Trust was formed in 2017, by us patients suffering from Muscular Dystrophy (MD) & Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). In 2016, we started off as a small Whatsapp group of patients reaching out to each other.
With enthusiastic employees and volunteers, we are ready to support you no matter any time.
