Sathi Rewrites Her Destiny With A Pen

“We must embrace pain and burn it as fuel for our journey.” – Kenji Miyazawa

The life of M.V Sathi is the inspirational story of the struggle. Sathi , hails from the Kasaragod district, is a fighter for Spinal muscular atrophy, a genetically incurable disease. She could not even complete her basic education. But, it never broke her spirit or dissuaded her from anything.  She could overcome all her limitations by her reading habit. Let’s go through the life of this well-known writer, who rewrites her destiny with a pen.

Sathi was born as the fourth child of late Civik Kodanad and M.V Paaty. She attended a nearby school where her father was a teacher. Little Sathi could not continue her education after the 4th grade due to the disease. Her father Civic, who was a teacher in her school, introduced her to the world of reading. First, she only read the book. Later she began to put down the details of each book. She was able to make notes of about 2740 books she had read. Thus books became a part of her life. She penned stories and poems for all India radio and magazines. She was a member of the local library and read around 360 books in her childhood itself

M.V Sathi

There is a huge collection of photos and articles by prominent writers entitled ‘ente amulya nithikal’ in her house. The wheelchair-bound lady is eager to keep pen pal friendships with many writers. Although she was forced to drop out of school, her story became part of the school textbook in Malayalam and Kannada. Its title was ‘Vayichu vayichu vedhana marannu’. Students who read her story wrote a lot of letters to her and she keeps it as a valuable treasure.

A lot of short stories and poems have been published. A collection of stories named ‘Guliga varacha chitrangal’ came out in 2011. The first collection of stories included 14 stories.  In 2020, Payal books published her collection of books called ‘Kaalvariyile malaakha’. A documentary titled ‘Sathi Bhavam sahabaavam’ about Sathi was released in 2021. This inspiring lady won the Viral sahitya vedhi award in 2020. Three musical albums, penned by Sathi, have been released. She also acted in an album.

And finally, she bagged the National Award for Outstanding creative adult person with disabilities by the Ministry of Social justice and empowerment.

Life puts a lot of problems in front of us. Life hides a solution to overcome it in the midst of problems. If you succeed in finding the hidden solution you can conquer life. Sathi’s life is an example of it.
