Emi Sebastian from Ernakulam is one of the most valuable assets and member of MINd organization. She was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy at the age of 15 years old. With regular exercises and physiotherapy she’s able to walk and do things on her own to an extent. She became a part of MINd organization in the year 2018 and in December 2020 WE (Women Empowerment) a sister group for the women in MINd organization was formed with Emi as the coordinator.
She has her father, mother,brother, sister in law and a nephew in her family. She is a chemistry graduate and even though Chemistry was a little difficult subject for a person with a disability, it is what she desired to learn. After completing her graduation she worked in a soil testing lab for 2 years and at the water authority for 6 months. Later with frequent falling while climbing the staircase she couldn’t continue to go to work in an office.
It was then when she could not go out and work, she started looking for job opportunities to work from home and decided to take tution for children. At first she took tution for free, later started to take paid tution classes. When the Covid lockdown came, she searched on youtube and started to make cakes. She taught around 25 members in MINd organization to make cakes which helps them to be financially independent.
Currently she has been working in a company, EY in Technopark as a data annotator, since last year and is working from home. She got this job through MiND organization. I taught around 25 members in MiND to make cakes online. Apart from the work she also takes tuition for the children in MiND organization. She wishes to help people who go through the disability and spread hope and courage to face life as it goes.
Mobility in Dystrophy (MIND) Trust was formed in 2017, by us patients suffering from Muscular Dystrophy (MD) & Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). In 2016, we started off as a small Whatsapp group of patients reaching out to each other.
