AVANI

Every human individual has the responsibility towards protecting and safeguarding the environment in which they are living. MIND Trust recognizes this concern and conceptualized Project Avani to fulfill MIND’s responsibilities towards a better Earth. In this relationship-building process with nature MIND trust and people with disabilities are getting back the nurture and care from the earth. And we believe that irrespective of differences and disabilities all individuals have responsibilities to protect their home. Impacts of human lives and unsustainable use of natural resources have impacted nature in a way it is affecting other living organisms and now Earth requires scientific intervention from human societies to survive and sustain itself. Avani proposes an ideal approach to environmental protection and long-term behaviours. Avani also demonstrates what persons with MD and SMA can do to help the environment where they live.

In 2021, the ‘Today For Nature’ initiative brought together Koot volunteers, students, and community members to plant an impressive 300 saplings, fostering a greener environment. The following year, on Earth Day, 50 saplings were gifted to students at UIT Pathanapuram College, while 150 plants distributed to people in Alappuzha district.

To deepen the community’s connection to nature, seven engaging webinars and several informative classes were held, covering topics such as living in harmony with the environment, wheelchair farming, floriculture, energy conservation, and planting trees in public spaces.

One standout event, ‘Neerthullikal’ in March 2022, provided much-needed drinking water for birds during the hot summer months, highlighting the project’s commitment to wildlife.

The Prerana project, which supports children with Muscular Dystrophy (MD) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), is part of the broader Avani initiative. Through a variety of classes and webinars, these children have embraced their creativity in drawing programs designed to strengthen their bond with nature.

The Avani Hour, another exciting aspect of the program, focused on energy conservation, successfully reducing the electricity bill for the children’s home.

In 2023, a WhatsApp group was created for those passionate about farming, fostering community connections. A highlight of the year was a competition in June to celebrate the best farmer on a wheelchair, showcasing the incredible spirit and determination of participants.

Various recreational programs continue to be organized, ensuring that everyone can engage, learn, and grow together in this vibrant community effort.
